A scam caller. Refused to say where he worked. Heavy Indian accent.

Received a call today by this number. Person on the other end of the line had a heavy Indian accent. He insisted that our internet connection had been compromised and had gone from private domain to public domain. I responded that I would have a word with my partner and investigate this and pressed him for his number - this was the number he gave. The end on our conversation became heated as he didn't respect the answer I gave him - I hung up.

Same as everyone else. Scam caller saying the BT line is not secure and there’s 4 other people highjacking the line. Claimed to be from BT. Said he could fix it by us having an android phone ready when he called back.

I said can't do it now I'll take their number and call them back. He try to get me to do it know or he'd call me back later. I insisted on the number, he gave me this number. I asked him name, said Robin William!!!!!! ? ? ?? Really. I hate these people. It was in my home phone number. That I just got from talk talk. They were the only ones that have it. I'm fuming!!!

I've just had the same experience with a non UK accented caller (who called from a local number when I check 1471) who gave this number to call back when I queried his identity. Again claiming he was from BT and he would speed up my internet as it was running slowly. He wanted me wanted me to download some desktop software, from the following site: https://myopenreach.yolasite.com - I declined!

Asian sounding male said his name was MIKE from BT openreach & said someone was trying to hack into my computer. Wanted me pass information over the phone but when challenged was unable to identify me. Told him to go forth & multiply! The cheeky bastard rang again twice.

Had a call from someone claiming to be BT and they had noticed that my internet had been changed from private to public connection. I said I wasn't even with BT. He said he knew that but BT had a view of all internet connections and mine was now public. I said I couldn't believe for one moment that had happened without my knowledge, and that I would check later. He wanted to talk me through what to do there and then on the phone, so I told him a) I didn't have time and b) I wanted a number to verify who he was. He said he would just call me back at a more convenient time so I pushed him for a number and he provided 01793596931.

Asian sounding guy. Said his name was Sam Lawrence ringing from Open Reach re my dropping internet signal. I told him I had to go out and could he give me the number to call back 00441793596931. He said he was British Telecom Technical Department and that I should make sure I called back as it is very urgent. SCAM

0441793496931 called today, yet another asian, this time call Henry purporting to be from BT! SCAM, SCAM, SCAM! I answered without looking at my screen as I was expecting a call from my sister! I feel sorry for the people who are taken in by this SCUM and I am heartily SICK of these DISGUSTING LOUTS! I understood the government were supposed to have this PROBLEM in hand! This number is OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS DO NOT ANSWER!!!

Yes, 'James Wilson' called saying that he was from BT and that my internet was about to crash as it had been seriosuly infected with malware etc etc. Interestingly this is the second time this type of call that has come to me and they only occur after I have spoken to BT ( and on the same day) so they must be hacking BT's system. I have made a complaint to BT as he tried to get me to go into my computer and I presume was going to try and get remote access to it...BT should be doing more to prevent this. I held him on the phone for some time asking him to explain himself and I asked him to help me find the number on BT's website... he was very reluctant to do things my way...

I found this number on the BT website whilst looking for a number in order to cancel my landline. I then Googled this number and it came up on this site.It is a legitimate BT number that users can ring from abroad as an alternative to the BT 0800 number. I have just spoken to a legitimate call handler to cancel my account as well.

An Asian sounding man who gave his name as Adam Leon called me purporting to be from BT and claiming their system was getting emergency notifications from our internet signifying that was insecure, and we could lose all our data. He also insisted, strangely, that the call was a BT service call, and that the service they were offering was free. Unsure, I asked for a nipumber I could call him back on, and this is th number he gave me. 0044 1793 596931. He warned that me that as soon as I called them, rather than him calling me, I would be charged. Fishy to say the least.

I have marked this phone number as dangerous as the caller could very easily have manipulated someone into believing the call was real. "Michael" said he was ringing from BT Technical Department saying that our BT Broadband was being accessed by others. As we have cancelled our BT broadband, I was pretty certain that it was a scam. I thought by asking him for his Employee Identification Number it would get rid of him, but he coolly gave me a number and his full name of "Michael Who" and told me to phone to check. He then gave me a number to call him back on that began 00, which seemed suspicious for a genuine BT number. I googled to check the number and found scam reports.

16/09/17 Had a call this morning from 01521582593 Asian man saying his name was David calling from BT in London about my broadband connection being at risk etc etc . I've had these calls before so knew he was a scammer. Strung him along for 45 minutes during which time I pretended to be on my computer and fed him a load of rubbish about what I was seeing on the screen! I asked for his number to call him back and he gave me 441793596931. I asked him what the 44 was at the beginning of the number and he said it was the London code! The disturbing thing is that when I called the number using a PAYG mobile I got a recorded message sounding very much like a female BT announcer - 'HELLO. THANK YOU FOR CALLING BT. IN A FEW WORDS TELL US HOW WE CAN HELP YOU TODAY. I have alerted BT to this.

Received a call supposedly from BT regarding my internet. Asked for her name - Jennie Wilson - and her telephone number which she said was 00 44 1793596931. She was Indian, probably the reason for putting 00 44 in front of the number. After she had given me the number she said it was the BT Hotline and asked me to ring it. Does she think I've just got off the banana boat. Pity she hadn't known that my internet provider wasn't BT !!!! I'm quite sure she would have asked me for my IP address had I just gone down the route of listening to her without me asking questions.

This caller told my elderly mother that he was from Windows and that she had a virus on her computer. I took the phone and called him a few choice names, which he understood perfectly well.! I rang the number briefly (will probably cost me a fortune!) but I needed to try and find the company to be told by an automated voice, saying "Thank you for calling BT". I am trying to report it now but don't really know where to start! plenty of options for reporting cyber crime but nothing I can see for telephone scams.

This is a very dangerous number. They are extremely convincing. I recommend that you question every thing that they say. Don't just hang-up, tell them that you are getting the authorities involved and do so. These people need to be stopped. I have had family and friends conned by them, which has cost them not only lots of money but stress and worry.

017935996931 Had a call from a Daniel Smith... An Asian sounding accent. I kept him going for 15 minutes by playing dumb. Hope it cost him. Only because I was bored though, however this scam is not on is it :(

I had the same, call from Indian Lady, she said from BT asked for her number and she gave me 0800 0203 2023, so i checked number and was BT number, she put me through to Tec dept and another Indian male who asked me to go and type in some details in Command window. I wasn't stupid nut intrigued to see how far he would take me. Got to website called www.123computer.com and he asked me to save the prompts till i got to allow changes then i cancelled the command. When i asked the male to call me back as I told him I had someone at the door I hung up, he called me back 3 times I answered and he got angry asking why i hung up :) He told me i was a F@?king idiot. SCAMMMMMMMM!!!!

This number was given as a 'customer service' number by a person claiming to be calling from BT Openreach - but whose call has all the whiff of a scam! (The number he was calling from: 02133476890) This may well be a genuine BT Openreach number - but the number he was calling from almost certainly wasn't!

Just been called from BT Technical department who tried to get me to load a remote client 'IMPCRemote' onto my mac. Twenty minutes wasted -even got to talk with the 'Boss'. Claimed he could speed up my internet. Fairly convincing as have an outstanding broadband speed problem. Couldn't give me the BT fault number so told them where to go.

Asian sounding man claiming to be from 'BT overseas'. Said there was a fault with my internet. I asked for his number as I said I was busy and would ring him back. He gave me this number which is not an overseas number. A scam that needs to be reported.

Scam call from “ NotBTtechnicaldepartment ” about hackers using my router. I’ve been professionally involved with computer systems for thirty years. They were talking to the wrong person, this time. Managed to string them along for twenty-two minutes during which time they weren’t calling someone who might be taken in. Perhaps those who feel able should make it their duty to waste these thieves time!

This number still has not been removed , today I had a call saying it was BT technical service a foreign sounding gentleman put me on to his supervisor when challenged the supervisor then threatened to cut off internet so I hung up.

A LEGITIMATE number owned and run by BT. Today I had a call from an Indian-accented man "Daniel Smith" who "works for BT Openreach" - the number he was really calling from was withheld. The scam is potentially very dangerous and I will report this new version to Action Fraud. He said that he wanted to send an engineer to my home to "fix a problem with my router" - which I know doesn't have any problems. He sought my agreement to agree a one-hour timeslot tomorrow. This was the point where I said I would ring back to make the appointment and he volunteered his number: which is a real BT number but surely NOT where he was calling from. I'm very concerned as to what would happen to an elderly and unsuspecting scam victim who gave access to their home as a result of one of these calls.

A few days ago I had a call from someone claiming to be calling from Virgin Media, and speaking with a strong non-UK accent. He said my line was being used in two places. I pointed out that I'm not with Virgin Media, I'm with BT Openreach and my ISP. He said he'd give me a BT Customer Services number so I could check: 0044 1793 596931 . I replied that wasn't a proper number, did he mean 01793, which he didn't understand, so I asked if he was calling me from the UK. Yes, he said, from London. No you're not, my phone isn't showing a London number. (It was showing 01313 394474.) Well, if I didn't believe him, he'd hang up, which he did, and I blacklisted his number.

I work Level 3 in IT, they called our business and told me that our IP address has been hitting their webserver and asked if Id changed our proxy settings. Asked if Id given out our broadband information. I work in IT, so i wanted to see where this call was going, so I played DUMB.. They asked me to bring up a command prompt then at the point they wanted me to carry out some file association change I terminated the call. DO NOT FOLLOW ANY OF THEIR INSTRUCTIONS. TERMINATE THE CALL AND DON'T EVEN CALL THEM BACK!

They are a SCAM. claim to be BT and have a fault with my router. At the same time i was on the other like to the REAL BT. They said it was a scam.

Had a call to my mobile from an Asian sounding lady calling herself Helen Bloom. She was clearly in a call centre and said that she was from BT Internet and that my router was not working properly and asking for details of my internet account.. I refused and said that I would call her back. She gave me the number 0044 1793 596931. Clearly a scam. Tried to report it to BT but they really weren't interested

I have an ex directory number. Received a call today from an Asian claiming to be a BT level 5 technician James Patrick BT0129 who said that hackers had compromised my line and BT would need to fix this or I would be disconnected for 10 months. I don't know what information he would have tried to steal. My ISP is not BT and I strung him along for a while before laughing at him for being an idiot. The number he gave was +0044 01973 596931.

This number called me last week claiming they were from BT advising that I had an internet problem, when challenged the lady talking to me put the phone down. I've just this moment got off the phone to another call from the same place! After stringing the caller on for a few minutes & playing dumb I've managed to accertain THEY TRY TO GET YOU TO TYPE IN WWW.TEAMVIEWER.COM INTO YOUR RUN PROGRAMS APPLICATION. DO NOT DO THIS AS IT WILL GIVE THEM REMOTE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER!!! When I challenged them on this & threatened with the police, the man on the phone got really nasty & told me to shut up!!! Hope that helps :)

Automated call claiming to be BT with WiFi being compromise & asking to press 1 to respond. Didn’t go that far, l hung up. It’s appears to be a SCAM!!!

Indian lady called Clara Smith called me after a lot of discussion on whether she was legit, she put me though to a supervisor. Said someone was trying to hack into my computer, after a couple of iminutes he got quite nasty and i asked him not to speak to me like that and he then told me to go f**k myself - and then said did you hear me ?? I hung up. Quite unsettling.

Dominic Coleman called. Said he was from BT Openreach and there was a problem with my WiFi. I’m an ignoramus about all these systems but I went along with it informing him that someone had contacted me earlie on in the day about a problem but had rung off. (I’d asked an awkward question!) Gave me the number to call back. Automated reply but wouldn’t let me through unless I gave a phone number. Rang off.

A guy called and when I asked him about this authenticity of BT employee, he said he will provide some CLEP number which is only provided to BT support team. I tried asking his number and found here that it is the same experience others have. He was saying that my internet will be disconnected for a month because of some virus affecting BT servers due to my browsing habit

Scam - claiming to be BT

An Asian sounding man called me today and said he was from BT Technical dept. When I asked what number he was calling me from he gave this number preceded by 0044 - illogical if he was calling from the UK. He also said he was calling from BT HQ at 81 Newgate Street London but, of course, the number is not a London number. When challenged he then said he was calling over VOIP because it's cheaper! He insisted that he was from BT calling about problems they had detected even though I am not a BT customer. When he said he was going to give me a security number to access their server to look at problems on my system I decided I had had enough and put the phone down. I dialed 1471 and found that the number that had called me was 007145.

Asian sounding lady, who when challenged, put me through to her supervisor to explain. Said all things outlined above. Told him I was hardly likely to give a total stranger access to my computer because he rang and said so. Very polite, he understood but I could take his word for it! Eventually asked for a number and was given the one above. Have not checked it.

Had a call from Shaun Prior (BT ID 9608) saying he worked for BT Internet and that as the cabling for our internet was BT, they were responsible for security and it'd been breached. He couldn't name my ISP provider, but said he needed my help. I asked him for a number to ring back on. He gave me 01793586973 which I dialled - it didn't work, so he said to put +44 in front, which obviously made no difference. He then gave me 01793596931. I called it, it came up as BT Cust Serv. Shaun had given me a 'unique' Customer License No starting CLSID. I said I'd ring back. I rang this number again, spoke to a man who said they'd see if Shaun was free, asking if my account was open or closed! Eventually he said it was a scam call. When I did 1471 the number was 01258 532658.

Asian sounding women, could not understand most of what she said so didn't pick up her name. Listened for a while as she explained how hackers were trying to get to me. When I suggested she was very clever to know this, she lost her place on the script and had to start over. When I suggested it might be a scam, I was told to 'shut up'. When I suggested that was a bit rude, I was told i had to 'listen' to her. i started to laugh and informed her I had not been a BT customer for around 15 years so she hung up. Number now blocked.

He convinced my husband but fortunately not me. I was listening as I’d only just put phone down to another. Quite convincing this guy.

01793 596931 20th April - just had a call from this number purporting to be from BT, claiming the account had been hacked and was being accessed from other sources. Tried to get me to download Teamviewer.

Received a call from a lady telling me that she was calling from BT Technical service. A problem with my computer. I just laughed down the phone at her and hung up. If the number is identifiable, the location of that number must be known as well. Why does the authority leave these scammers to continue ripping people off?

15th April 2017. Usual scam. Internet hacked etc. Knew my name. I yelled at her a bit and told her what she was doing was wrong.

Asian woman called Amy Smith called apparently from BT technical with bad line. Tried to convince me that hackers have took over my broadband. After asking her to tell me my account number if she was genuine she wouldn't. Went on & on trying to get me to log on my pc.When I told her she was a scammer and I will submit to the police she called me a silly man and I should go & f**k myself. BT may have their faults but I don't think they would say that lol :) Avoid at all costs!

01793596931 called claiming to be bt. Tried to get me to give them access to my computer. Indian accent, time lag on line. Knew quite a lot about me (name, address, IP number etc,. Said I'd call them back, then checked with BT. Regular scam. V. Nasty. Beware!

Adam Smith - (who no doubt has Indian parents who are living or lived in India all their lives) rang with the usual nonsense about hackers on my computer at midnight or 2am. "Go to your computer and press Windows key and R" - that was as far as he got. I said, "Are you calling from 01793596931?" He said, "Yes". I said, "I have hackers trying to get onto my computer at this very minute - GOODBYE!" Have had previous calls, both male and female - usually early evening in India -about 7pm. It is so unkind to string them along but so very satisfying. I hope BT soon take steps to protect their elderly customers from these fake calls.

Have called me twice this morning and my colleague once. Claim to be from Technical support.

Bt technical department apparently next time they call it will scream down the phone. They also keep calling my elderly neighbour and he doesn't even own a computer. Grrrr

Claiming to be from BT Openreach. 'Problems with your router' 'Computer corrupted' etc. Interestingly I had been in touch with my provider [PlusNet] the day before with slow internet problems and they had sent on details to BT about SNR problems on my line so initially gave this call some credence. After talking to the guy and then his 'supervisor' became clear all was not right so asked for their address and tel number so I could check up on them. Gave this number and 81 Newgate St, London. BT should never contact anyone in this way, they would refer it back to the internet provider. A coincidence that could have been a real problem!

Guy with a very strong accent called me. Saying was from BT. That i have a corrupted file lol. He ask me to open my console to enter a line of command.... i didn't obviously. Asked for a number..got this one but without the 0 at the beginning. It's a scam and judging by the number of reports on here it's going on for a while. Should we report to BT or even to the cybercrime line?

6/12/2016 Indian voice in busy call centre said unusual activity on my broadband and wanted to secure access. I was suspicious so asked for a call back number and was given 01793 596931 . Found this web chat and did not call back

Indian woman in call centre. Said she was from bt openreach. She had my name and said she had other details, up address etc Someonr trying to access my internet router from the street. Asked for a number to call back and gave this one. Checked this website before trying it. Reported to BT. Apparently they would never phone like this unless we had reported a fault.

I've just had the same call: woman with pronounced Indian accent, lot of noise in the background. Gave me same number 01793 596931 (when I said I'd get my IT manager to contact her). Said she was calling from BT Openreach & that hackers were trying to block the server. This is worrying because there is a genuine BT Openreach site. Do BT know and are they doing anything about it? Would be good if they could put a headline message in bold to warn people of possible scams. Had similar call yesterday.

Same as below, tried to get me to sit at my computer and give security details.

Just got the same thing. BT calling, they need to cut off my internet for 6 months due to malware being downloaded without my knowledge. They could help by talking me through the problem/solution. Indian sounding chap who called himself Ryan, with the background noise like a call centre.

01793596931 phoned me saying I had a problem with my computer and my internet was going to be cut off. I do not have my internet with BT, I use the Post Office so I knew he was lying. I asked him what country he was phoning from and he said UK. I asked him what time it was and I had to wait for him to look it up before he could tell me. He is a scammer. I asked for the phone number but he gave me the number without the 0 and when I said it was not a UK number he gave it to me again with the +44, This proves he is not in the UK. When I phoned the number it has a recording saying it is a BT number but it is a scam.

Called today apparently from BT to say my router was damaging my PCs.wanted me to access my computer. I said I wanted to check this was genuine and was given thus number to call. I used a different phone and called BT direct. This is a scam to gain access to your PC and nothing to do with BT. Do not engage with these people. BT will be investigating

"Natasha" strong Indian accent and poor line, called this morning saying there is a problem with my internet and I was going to be disconnected. She wanted me to go online so she could show me the problem. When I asked for her number she gave me this one, I did 1471 and the number given was 001 813 908 5530 also scam. As reported before there was a lot of background noise sounded like a call centre.

I received a call this morning. Said he was calling re BT Internet. Some unusual activity on my PC. Wanted access to my PC. Asked him the number he was calling from and he gave me 01793 596931. As soon as I said I would call him back he rang off.

"We are calling you from the technical department of BT. Your connection to the internet is going to be withdrawn for 3 months because irregular usage has been detected". This said terribly slowly, with a pronounced Indian Accent. Caller number withheld, as usual. I played along with him, and got his supervisors number 01793 596931 . I started to dial this but thought better of it. The original caller was on top of background noise that sounded like a UK call centre (unlike most Indian scam calls). I reported all the above to BT.

Just received a call from an Asian gentleman called Alex Carter claiming to be from BT and saying I have a problem with my IP/internet connection. Told him I am not with BT as they are useless but he insisted that all other providers use BT and it was up to them to sort out and stop all these other people using my internet I just need to start up my computer and allow their technician access to fix! Told him I was too busy and asked him for a telephone number for me to call back when convenient to me. He eventually gave me a number to call and his name as Alex Carter and job Id as BT1912 but only when I said if he couldn’t give me this information he was clearly a scammer! These people are unbelievable & very convincing with their high pressure patter, needless to say I will not be calling back ...

I received a call from a man with a very strong accent claiming to be from BT to help speed up our broadband. The fact that he greeted me saying “hi I’m Martin” then 5 minutes later told me his name was John Wilson, was a huge red flag. I can confirm that this is a scam call number as I called the real BT to confirm the number was not affiliated with them. Do not give out any information or allow these scammers access to your computer!
