0800281801 THE COMMENTS THAT STATE THIS IS A GENUINE NUMBER ARE MADE UP AND PART OF THE SCAM. This number called me 5 times. One after the other. My phone stated this was suspected fraud. On the 5th time I decided to answer. They claimed to be Nationwide fraud dept. I advised them that I work for Nationwide and would call them back internally to confirm. They hung up on me. I actually do work for Nationwide so have let the actual Fraud Prevention Team know this number. The coments that state this is a genuine number are incorrect and also scam. Please do not believe them.
On 18 July 2019 I received a call on my mobile displaying 0800 281 801 from a male with a posh English accent claiming to be from Nationwide who knew my name and asked me to verify my details in connection with a document that they couldn't read clearly. The caller seemed to be reading from a script and I immediately suspected a scammer so did not provide any details. I asked for his phone number to call them back but he did not immediately know it. He said he would have to look for it and after some time then read out a random phone number. I did not phone back because I do not currently bank with Nationwide. I believe the number has been cloned to display as a genuine Nationwide phone number. Scammer may have got my name and number from a previous online transaction.
Given the variety of opinions expressed below, I think that it's important to set the record straight here. Firstly, 0800 281801 *is* a genuine "Freefone" number for Nationwide Building Society. If you dial it, you *will* be connected to the genuine organisation. BUT...! Just because this number is presented by CLI(Calling Line Identification), it *doesn't* mean that it's Nationwide Building Society calling you - from a technical perspective, it's trivially easy to "spoof" the calling number... there's no guarantee that the caller is even calling from within the UK. So, by all means, answer it if you wish and listen to what the caller says... but DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, GIVE THE CALLER NY INFORMATION ABOUT YOURSELF OR ABOUT YOUR ACCOUNT, NOT EVEN ON THE PRETEXT OF "TAKING YOU THROUGH SECURITY" - AND DO NOT TAKE ANY ACTION ON WHAT YOU ARE TOLD (e.g. TRANSFERRING MONEY) - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! Wanted to get me into a branch to go over my financial needs. I declined & they didn't hassle me.
This a genuine nationwide number they rang me to check if I had been scammed As I had made a large payment to an individual by bacs to a private person! And they We're ringing as they had stopped the payment until I had verified it.
said it was nationwide wanting further info..lady indian call centre...i rang local branch insted and they put me thru to the call centre number 0800302010 and the english call centre told me i just needed to call inlocal branch to set up id/security...i would not give info on the other number...the one ive posted is genuine.
This is a number used by nationwide but when you ring back they say they will try at a later date.
It is a Nationwide number but it doesn’t mean it’s Nationwide using it. Outbound diallers allow you to manipulate the number you are calling from, this was confirmed when Nationwide said it was one of three numbers but there NO evidence that we would have or did try to call you.
0800281801 This number called me today but rang off too quickly for me too answer. Unknown but could be Dangerous! Called this number back but only female voice stating that it was Nationwide and they'll call back another day. I decided to call my local branch... no, no one had called me from there, so told me to ring Head Office which on the website and the back of bank cards - 0800 30 20 11. Called them, no nobody rang me. I was told that if it was definitely Nationwide and I had an ongoing issue, that I would've been given a reference number at the time. If any doubt, visit your local branch or one you use regularly, with a few letters/forms of your ID and if you're known, they will have your face already on the system, or give Head Office a call.
Received a call from this number this afternoon. If this is a genuine Nationwide number why did they hang up immediately I answered and said hello? This happened to me a few months back same silent/aborted call. Weird.
This may or MAY NOT be a genuine Nationwide call. I am currently in my branch and although it is the same number that Nationwide use from their security team I am aware that it was not genuine as Nationwide do not have the current telephone number. Noted also that if this was genuine there would a note on my account when accessed which there was not. If I’m doubt, use the number on the back of your card.
No message left. Checked on the Nationwide website and this is the message on there about this number: Missed calls from 0800 281 801 This is a genuine Nationwide number If you have a missed call from the number 0800 281 801, please do not be concerned; this is a genuine Nationwide number. One of our consultants has tried to contact you, and was unable to talk to you on this occasion. If you dial this number you will hear a message informing you that Nationwide Building Society attempted to contact you, and that we will try again at a later date. We tend to avoid leaving details of why we called on answering machines. This ensures we don't disclose personal information to other people who may hear the message.
Call claiming to be from Nationwide said that the credit card belonging to Mr (indistinct) was subject to suspicious activity - this is indeed suspicious because I do not have a Nationwide bank account.
It appears to be a Nationwide number which would explain why some are saying its really them but the number can be faked! so sometimes it might not be. I refused to give any security details and insisted on calling back on the normal number I use. They said no one from the bank had called me. So either there are scammers faking the no or NW are crap at making notes for when customers call back. If you ring this number you just get a message saying they had tried to ring you. If genuine why don't NW tell you what dept etc to call!
This call is safe. Nationwide building society have a link on their website about the 0800 281 801 calls. I had a missed call from 0800 281801 on Friday 29th December 2017. No message was left. On the same day my husband also received a missed call from this number. Again no message was left. Surely if this is Nationwide they would have left a message! We have not called them back and have not received any more calls from this number.
I will NOT answer unsolicited calls ~ (today ~ 3pm) Nationwide should be aware of current security concerns. Cold calling is not the professional way to go.
This is definitely Nationwide. When it rang there was no-one at the other end so I put the phone down and dialed 1471 and checked the number on this site. I was about to look up Nationwide's number when my phone rang again. I didn't answer and a young women started to leave me a message which I knew was genuine so I spoke to her. I feel relieved that this was not a scam but my advice is don't answer this number because if it is genuine Nationwide will leave you message telling you why they are contacting you.
Claimed to be from Nationwide. called local branch and Nationwide had not called me.
This number called me . I don't have anything to do with nationwide. Did not answer .Could be someone scamming using real numbers
Be reassured it is definitely Nationwide Building Society. This was concerning PPI claim I had put in. I didn't answer the original call it was the voicemail and the telephone number she gave which I recognised.
Had a call today from 0800 281 801 and checked here Mixed reviews below confused me so I called the local branch. They confirmed Nationwide 0800 number formats are usually 0800 554 then a 4 digit branch number Branch were unable to identify if anyone had called me today. Then I found a voicemail and it was a genuine Nationwide call about a current matter I am discussing with them My opinion is this number is safe but observe usual phone security and commin sense.
10/08/17. Called from 0800281801 at 15:32, caller purporting to be from Nationwide to discuss my a/c. Declined to give my security details over the phone so caller told me to visit Branch. Staff confirmed it was a Nationwide phone number but had no record of anyone calling me from Branch nor Headoffice. Advised not to reply to this number again and let Nationwide write to me in future.
Nationwide building Society apparently called about 'my account'. Asked me to confirm my full name and address. I declined and asked if I might call them back. They gave me a further number 0800281801 and although they had given their name as Chris they said that when I called back any of their colleagues could answer the call! I called my local branch and told them of the call. They assured me that no ne had called me about my account. Please BEWARE!
called me on my mobile, having just let my branch. I did not answer as I did not recognise the number, no voicemail left. Came on this site and saw mixed messages, so confused.
I called into my branch at Nationwide and rang their fraud line, they confirmed it is not them!
I just confirm with Nationwide and they said block the number its not ours and when I called this number it goes straight to voicemail and the female voicemail read "Hi its nationwide call and we will call back later" which confirms its fake. Always check the bank number online and call them directly rather reply to call you have received and give all the information about your bank.
I called in my local Nationwide branch today. They confirmed it is a genuine Nationwide number
There seems to be a wide opinion on whether this no. is legit or not. Does anyone know for sure ?
Nationwide Building Society. Absolutely fine. I was expecting a call from them regarding an appointment but didn't know the number they would call from. Checked on this site when the call came through prior to answering.
I keep getting calls from this number - several times a day - says "This is an important message for..... my name....." and asks me to press options for assistance....... If this is a genuine call then the customer service is appalling!!!! Who wants an automated call from their bank telling you to call them?
Called and asked to speak to my husband. When I said he wasnt here, he hung up before I had time to ask who was calling.
They called but left no message. I got their number from 1471, called it and it said Nationwide Building Society but was unclear. I think it is a scam as looked number up in Nationwide website and there is no record of it there
Just phoned me left a voice msg this second time its happened they tried recent by texting saying confirm you have sent £7000 into a bank account so i went into natwest they said its a scam they are on a local number so now i am getting it fraudsters pretending to be nation wide ? I don't have. Lot of money i am self emp stop calling me!!!
Nationwide Building Society apparently calling about 'activity on my account'. Gave me a reference number and told me to call 0800 464 3030 when I said I couldn't talk. I rang the 'real' Nationwide number from their website, told them the conversation and when they checked there was no reference to anyone calling me, or any need to because of activity on my account. Someone is lying! I wouldn't trust it just in case and if anyone asks 'security' questions over the phone when they have called you I am always suspicious!
I answered it, but it didn't connect, it's not a full number so I'm suspicious about this one, area looks local, to my area.
